In Washington D.C., Vice President Kamala Harris met with Texas House Democrats and hailed their special session walkout a patriotic gesture.

As a result of their actions, the Texas House of Representatives were unable to vote on a controversial election law. VP Harris stated the Texas Democrats' actions were bold and patriotic, and that they were taken in defense of the freedom to vote for all Americans, not just Texas Democrats.

According to the vice president, the measures made by Texan Democrats to safeguard voting rights are comparable in significance to pivotal events in the suffrage campaign in the United States. "Voting is not a one-size-fits-all proposition," Harris added.

On Wednesday, Madam Vice President welcomed 16 Texas State House and Senate Legislators to the White House and received them in the Roosevelt Room for a roundtable meeting.

The Lone-Star State Legislators who are all members of the State's Democrat Party worked out of the State legislature a few weeks back after they blocked a proposal to restrict voting in their state during a legislative session. This move narrowly prevented passage of the Senate Bill 7 in a majority-Republican legislature, a measure that would limit early voting hours, ban drive-through voting, make it easier to overturn an election and restrict mail-in ballots, among other things.

"And so, I’m very pleased to welcome you — and for many of you, welcome you back — to the White House to have yet another very important conversation, and this time about one of the most important pillars of our democracy, which is about the fundamental right to vote."

Vice President Harris who has been tasked by the President to tackle the issue of voting rights, said this during the press remarks, "When we look at these attempts to infringe on people’s access to voting, we know that it is going to impact people — Americans with disabilities, seniors, students, people of every walk of life. "

Vice President Harris reiterated hers and President Joe Biden's "absolute commitment" to seeing Congress pass two bills -- the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, or HR 4, and the For The People Act, or HR/SR 1.

The Legislators who attended were:

  • Rep. Gina Hinojosa of Austin
  • Rep. Senfronia Thompson of Houston
  • Sen. Carol Alvarado, Chair of the Texas Senate Democratic Caucus
  • State Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer of San Antonio
  • Rep Jasmine Crockett of Dallas
  • State Sen. Royce West of Dallas
  • State Rep. Jessica González of Dallas
  • Rep. Yvonne Davis of Dallas
  • Rep. Rafael Anchía of Dallas
  • Rep. Victoria Neave of Dallas,
  • Rep. Nicole Collier of Fort Worth, Chair of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus;
  • Rep Trey Martinez Fischer of San Antonio,
  • Rep. Ron Reynolds of Missouri City;
  • Rep. Jarvis Johnson of Houston,
  • Rep. Armando Walle of Houston,
  • Rep Chris Turner of Grand Prairie, chairs of the House Democratic caucus.
  • Sen Beverly Powell of Burleson,
  • Sen José Menéndez of San Antonio

After that she delivered remarks on the Administration’s efforts to expand child care and relieve the financial pressures of parenthood. The current discussions involves new guidance on $15 billion in grants to support child care programs, forthcoming payments to families from the child tax credit and a separate credit to help parents pay for care.

These are all parts of the continued implementation of President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion relief package to help stimulate the U.S. economy which is slowly healing from the coronavirus pandemic. It has been estimated and expected that several million families will benefit from the assistance, while underscoring that the money should enable more parents to work and boost economic growth.

“We know that the pandemic did not invent these challenges, but it certainly accelerated these challenges,” Vice President Harris said. “Childcare centers were closed. Parents have been out of work. Families’ budgets have been stretched.”

On Sunday, Madam Vice President Harris began her first foreign trip which was to Guatemala and Mexico. The flight which depart from Joint Base Andrews got off to a rocky start Sunday, when a technical issue grounded Air Force 2 after about 30 minutes into the flight.

It was two hours later when she and accompanying passengers switched planes to the back-up C32, which is an Air Force Boeing modified 757 before continuing on to Guatemala City, where she held the first of two days of talks on Monday to discuss the root causes of migration from Central America and Mexico.

As I reported here, Madam Vice President was to travel to Guatemala and Mexico with aimed to tackle migration, investment and corruption. She is to meet the Head of States, Government Officials, community leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs.

Vice President Harris has described her task as finding solutions to tackle the root causes of the border crisis, including corruption and the lack of economic opportunities. Her staff say this first visit is primarily an information-gathering trip.

On arrival in the capital city Guatemala City she was welcome after deplaning by Guatemala's Foreign Affairs Pedro Brolo and US Ambassador to Guatemala William Pop.

June 7th

On Monday, she met with Guatemalan President Dr. Alejandro Giammattei at the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura where they first began the day with a two-hour round and bilateral table frank and candid meeting with both sides directly addressing what they want and where their concerns lie.

“We don’t have time for glossing over concerns that we have, and so we did have a very frank conversation about the importance of an independent judiciary. We had a conversation about the importance of a strong civil society,” Harris said, nodding to areas where Giammattei and his allies have faced criticism.

During the meeting, the Vice President laid out a plan on how to deter migration to the U.S. by working to improve both physical and economic security and combat corruption. She further explained that The Biden Administration will create an anti-corruption task force that will conduct investigations and will also enlist U.S. prosecutors and law enforcement officers to train their Central American counterparts to build corruption cases. The U.S. will also launch a task force to help combat human smuggling and trafficking across the various borders.

2) After both the Vice President and the Guatemalan President held a Press Conference, Vice President Harris warned against illegal migration to the US, saying: "Do not come. Do not come. The United States will continue to enforce our laws and secure our borders." She further added that Guatemalans must be given a "sense of hope that help is on the way".

"It must be coupled with relationships of trust. It must be coupled with tangible outcomes, in terms of what we do as leaders to convince people that there is a reason to be hopeful about their future and the future of their children," she further added.

Noting to areas where the Guatemalan President and its government have been lacking and have been facing criticism both in Guatemala and abroad, VP Harris “We don’t have time for glossing over concerns that we have, and so we did have a very frank conversation about the importance of an independent judiciary. We had a conversation about the importance of a strong civil society,”

3) Later, she held another roundtable meeting with human rights activists and other Guatemalan civil society leaders accompanied by Ambassador William Pop on addressing the root causes of migration.

During the meeting, Vice President Harris spoke of the “impact that the lack of judicial independence can have on civil society, especially with regard to the highest courts in the land.

4) Then she held another roundtable meeting and spoke at a women's intergenerational innovators and entrepreneurs event held at the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala in Guatemala City.

Vice President Kamala Harris was bound for Annapolis, Maryland where she made history once again on Friday as the first woman and First Female Vice President to deliver the keynote commencement address at the U.S. Naval Academy, at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Whilst delivering her 20 minutes keynote address, she told graduates the country faces a "significant turning point." She began by saying this, "Midshipmen, we are now entering the next era. A new age. A new epoch, with its own challenges, and with its own opportunities,"

She also spoke about how interconnected, interdependent and fragile the World is especially with how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone and shown the cracks in the World by saying this, "The global pandemic, you see, of course, has accelerated our world into a new era. If we weren't clear before, we know now: Our world is interconnected. Our world is interdependent. Our world is fragile."

She also addressed various challenges facing the nation and its service members, citing cybersecurity threats and climate change. Vice President Harris was then given her U.S. Naval Academy jacket at the graduation and commission ceremony

She as the first Black woman to be elected vice president gave a shout out and honoured to a new midshipman. Midshipman Sydney Barber made history of her own by becoming the first Black woman in the school's almost 175-year history to serve as brigade commander, who oversaw roughly 4,000 students this year.

She previously spoke with Midshipman Sydney Barber in a video call where like in her Friday address she told the Midshipman Barber and the graduating Navy Officers, "My ceremonial office was once occupied by the Secretary of the Navy, and displayed there, I have placed the shoulder boards of your brigade commander, Midshipman Sydney Barber."

While speaking via video to the Vice President, Midshipman Barber spoke about the STEM program which she helped launch and coordinate with the Navy for the children living around the base and the surrounding Annapolis.

Before the commissioning, Vice President Harris stopped by the United States Naval Academy Cemetery to pay respects to her former colleague in the Senate "a great and courageous American" GOP Sen. John McCain.
